A New Benchmark in "Not Getting It"

Even after reading the link for the 100th time, I still blink as if it can't possibly say what it seems to be saying. Look for yourself (I've cropped it down, but this is a screen capture of CNN's website at 5:30pm Central Time:

GOP Divided Over 'Magic Negro' song...

What?!?

Surely they meant something else. Surely they meant divided over how to apologize for such bald-faced racism.

Nope. The text of the linked article indicates that there are some in the GOP who think it's no big deal.

Pure, unbridled racism embraced by the Republican party. And this isn't in a smoky back room where John McCain can tell a "joke" about a woman being raped by a gorilla and liking it. No, this is right out in the mainstream day-to-day operations of the Republican party and some of them are actually proud of it.

The first defense of the closet racist is to claim they are "just kidding" or "joking." They're also the folks who frequently say "Now I'm not a racist but..." right before they say something incredibly racially offensive.

And the fact that they have Uncle Tom's like Ken Blackwell and Michael Steele to say "it's OK" doesn't change a damned thing. I know "Uncle Tom" is a pejorative that many find offensive... but if the shoe fits... and, I'm sure Steele and Blackwell won't be offended since they think "Barack the Magic Negro" is just good fun they'll realize I'm "just kidding."

I guess they wouldn't be offended if I wrote and distributed a song called "Fat, White Men with Little Dicks," since it would be "all in fun." Right? And, of course, it'd be a great "joke" if I wrote a song about those dumb-assed Catholics who think Jesus gives a rats ass if they ate meat on a Friday or not. Hell, how about a song joking about Arlen Specter's cancer? I mean, we can excuse anything in the name of "humor", right?

But remember these are the same folks who were outraged that John Kerry had the gall to mention Dick Cheney's daughter Mary when talking about gay marriage. They even tried to accuse Kerry of "outing" Mary Cheney, as if it was some big secret that she was a lesbian.

It's OK to "joke" about someone being a "Magic Negro" but don't dare point out the hypocrisy of someone else supporting treating gays and lesbians as second class citizens while your running mate has a lesbian daughter.

Instead of recognizing that they have lost their appeal to most Americans, the Republican party has decided to swallow the idea that most people supported Democrats because Republicans weren't racists, sexist, and homophobic enough.

Talk about not getting it.

Peace. Out.
